Healthy-ish Fast Food

If you were to make a graph depicting the number of times I get fast food and my weight in pounds, there would be a direct correlation. Here’s the thing about fast food: literally anything I make at home is healthier than anything I get in a drive-through line. Drive-through is convenient, yes. But not healthier.

A few years ago, skipping the drive-through felt like such an extreme sacrifice and required every ounce of my willpower to say “no”. Now, it’s as easy as brushing my teeth. I just don’t want it anymore, so it’s not hard to resist.

When I’m short on time or we’re in between hockey games on the other side of the state, sometimes convenience beats health. These are a few of my healthier favorites from restaurants here in Ohio:

Chick-Fil-A: twelve count grilled nuggets with zesty Buffalo sauce + kale crunch salad.

Dunkin’ Donuts: egg white and veggie omelette bites.

Grabengo: high protein shake. This shake has 70g of protein which is more than I need, but I call it the miracle shake because it keeps me feeling full for hours. When I’m in a season of working out or training for a race, I’m a bottomless pit and nothing satisfies my hunger. Enter this shake.

BAM Healthy Cuisine: turkey sandwich, goat cheese and almond salad, BAM balls. Basically anything on the menu and you’ll be in good shape!

Chipotle: chicken bowl with lettuce, salsa, fajita veggies, brown rice, and corn.

Rockne’s Firestone salad (Buffalo style): ice burg lettuce, Colby cheese, tomatoes, grilled chicken with Buffalo sauce.

Sam’s Club: Cranberry Crunch salad with grilled chicken, or a rotisserie chicken!

Sheetz: fruit cup, yogurt, or a sub sandwich with Turkey or chicken on whole wheat bread.

Remember: Make a plan, or plan to fail. I pack lunches and snacks often when we are traveling. Being out and about without a plan makes it harder to stay on track. Bring water with you and keep healthier snacks like mini-packs of nuts or seeds in the car for in a pinch!
